VintaBio was founded on the principle that high quality vectors should never be a barrier to the gene therapy industry. Our core expertise lies in the development and production of reliable and consistent premium-grade adeno-associated viral vectors (AAV). Our team is made up of scientists who know viral vectors and have supported numerous gene therapy programs through the clinic to market. Our team has over 120 years of combined experience in the cell & gene therapy field, and because of this, we understand the unique process requirements to develop and manufacture gene therapy products throughout the entire drug lifecycle. We take a partnership approach to ensure that rare and ultra-rare gene therapies have a viable path to patients.

Founder & Advisor

Junwei Sun, M.S. M.B.A., is the co-founder and Advisor at VintaBio bringing more than 20 years of experience in gene therapy to the company.  Junwei earned his M.S. in Immunology at the University of Pennsylvania and a M.B.A at the University of Western Ontario.  He has served as the Administrative Director of the Center for Cellular and Molecular Therapeutics at The Children’s Hospiral of Philadelphia (CHOP) and then was recruited to build the Center for Advanced Retinal and Ocular Therapeutics (CAROT) at University of Pennslyvania.  Along with Dr. Zhou, he pioneered the development of adeno-associated viral (AAV) vectors, establishing the foundation for the first two FDA-approve gene therapies, and was instrumental in moving forward the preclinical and clinical studies which led to the approval of Luxturna®.  He is a co-founder of Spark Therapeutics and a co-founder of Opus Therapeutics.  Junwei founded VintaBio to enable innovators to translate their gene therapies from discovery through the clinic all the way to the treatment of patients regardless of indication.

Dr. Shangzhen Zhou, M.D., is the co-founder and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of VintaBio bringing more than 34 years of experience in gene therapy to the company. Dr. Zhou earned her M.D. from Hunan Medical University, China, and began her career in gene therapy in the early 90s under Dr. Srivastava when gene therapy was in its infancy. It was there that she developed the foundational technology that established the first serotype independent, high-titer vector production platform to generate reliable and consistent vectors. She has held positions at Avigen, Somatix, Chiron (now Novartis) and most recently at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and University of Pennsylvania (CAROT) where she ran the vector core. In addition to contributing to the development of gene therapies for hemophilia and ocular indications, she played a pivotal role in developing the vectors used in Luxturna® and Zolgensma®. Additionally, Dr. Zhou founded and managed SAB Tech to produce research viral vectors for the gene therapy field. With over 100 published works that have been cited over 5,000 times, she is an internationally recognized expert in AAV gene therapy research. Dr. Zhou founded VintaBio to ensure that high quality vectors are never a barrier to advancing gene therapy treatments for patients and their families.
